How to replace old sealant around a bath

Task difficulty: A bit of skill required

I don't need a new bathroom suite or tiles but my bath surround is looking rather shabby. The sealant used to be white and now it's mildewed and breaking up in places. Using a Polycell Sealant Kitchen & Bathroom cartridge in white will achieve a seamless waterproof seal between the bath and the tiling and allow for any slight movement of the bath when in use.

Step by step process

  1. Step 1

    Step 1

First cut and scrape sway the old sealant using a sharp knife.

  2. Step 2

    Step 2

Next, paint on Polycell Sealant Remover to soften any residual old sealant and make it easy to remove.

  3. Step 3

    Step 3

Then, wipe off any remaining Sealant Remover with a wet cloth and allow to dry.

  4. Step 4

    Step 4

Before starting any filling, it is a good idea to run a full bath to weight it down to its normal level when in use - this stops the sealant from ever being overstretched and pulling away from the bath rim or tiling. Leave the bath filled until the sealant is completely dry, normally in about six hours.

  5. Step 5

    Step 5

To achieve a smart straight line, use masking tape and remove it within five minutes of application to create a smooth edge.

  6. Step 6

    Step 6

Now, fit a Polycell Sealant cartridge into a cartridge gun and slice the nozzle at a 45°angle to produce a thick enough bead to seal the gap.

  7. Step 7

    Step 7

Starting in one corner of the bath and, pushing the cartridge nozzle forward, squeeze the gun trigger to start the flow to run a continuous bead along the bath to fill the gap.

  8. Step 8

    Step 8

Finish off with a round-ended stick or similar tool and wipe away any excess with a damp cloth before it dries.
