How to repair a damaged wooden mantle piece

Task difficulty: Very easy

Your wooden mantelpiece has been damaged when you tried to strip off paint. You want to repair the damage.

Cover all furniture and flooring.
Step 2

Ensure the mantelpiece is clean, dry and structurally sound. Cut away any soft or rotting wood.
Step 3

Stir the Polycell Wood Flex Polyfilla until creamy, then using a filling knife, press well into the damaged area. Smooth to an even finish with the knife.
Step 4

Deep damage or holes should be built up in layers of 10mm - allow each layer to dry in between (this will take approx. two hours). Thick layers should be left overnight to dry.
Step 5

Sand the area prior to painting. If you're intending to use a stain, test a small are first to ensure a colour match between the filler and the wood.
