How to protect your mirror from damage from condensation

Task difficulty: Quite easy

I have a large mirror mounted on my bathroom wall and I've heard that condensation can get behind and corrode the silvering, making the surface look blotchy.

What you need is a waterproof seal round the edges of the mirror that will shut out moisture but be virtually invisible to the naked eye. The translucent version of new Polycell Squeeze & Seal sealant for kitchens & bathrooms is the answer.

Step by step process

  1. Step 1

    Step 1

Clean the mirror thoroughly, paying particular attention to the edges, and remove any loose grout or debris from the gap between mirror and wall. Allow all surfaces to dry.

  2. Step 2

    Step 2

Polycell Squeeze & Seal comes in a special malleable pack that you simply squeeze to apply the right amount of sealant - no more struggling with wasteful cartridge guns! Cut the nozzle of the pack at a 45° angle to make a suitable width seal, then run a continuous bead along to fill the gap.

  3. Step 3

    Step 3

Smooth off neatly with a round ended stick (an old wooden spoon, for example) and wipe away any excess with a damp cloth before it dries. The sealant is initially white when applied, but it dries to form an almost clear seal that blends perfectly with the edge of the mirror.
