Repairing rotten or damaged wooden frames Problem: Fix it with: You can do it: First dig out all the old, rotten wood until you get back to sound timber, then allow the area to dry out. If the wood is still slightly soft, apply a coat of Polycell Wood Hardener to the damaged area and allow to dry. Next, mix up equal proportions of Polycell Wood Repair to provide a sufficient quantity to complete the job. Apply with a small filling knife, working it well into the full depth of the damaged area and fill generously to just above the level of the surrounding wood. If the hole goes right through to the other side, simply tape a piece of card in place until the Wood Repair is set, to stop it falling through. With its strong adhesive properties, it will bond with the surrounding wood and become as strong as the original timber. Wood Repair will set in approximately six hours, after which it can be sanded back level with the original timber. It can then be undercoated and topcoated or will accept staining to match surrounding stained wood, and can be varnished if desired. Repairs made with Polycell Wood Repair will accept screws, nails or other fixings as it mimics wood in all details. This could be especially useful, for example, if you needed to repair hinges on windows or doors without fear that the repair would fail.
